Welcome to the first article in the Book Club section. I’m looking forward to bringing you more book worm content on the blog, but I’ll still be writing about life, health and style too.
Winter is beginning to bite in earnest, and we’re all looking for an excuse to curl up on the couch. Instead of lining up another episode on Netflix, try these cosy book and drink pairings. They’ll make for an afternoon so delightful, you’ll hope winter goes on forever.
Earl Grey with Jane Eyre
Full of stormy imagery, a hint of mystery and (of course) true love, Charlotte Bronte’s classic tale is perfect for adding poetry to a wet weekend. The sweet bergamont of earl grey tea is the perfect accompaniment to this intense classic. For a smooth cup add milk, or swap for a dash of lemon for a more Jane-like spark.
Buttered rum with The Father Brown Stories
Written by G. K. Chesterton, Father Brown is a collection of short detective stories involving the unusual priestly protagonist and titular character’s involvement in various crimes. A sweet and spicy buttered rum is the perfect drink to accompany the Sherlock-like exposes. It feels very much in keeping with the old English countryside conjoured up by Chesterton’s rolling prose.
Hot chocolate with Mary Poppins
We’ve all seen the film, but have you read the book? Or rather books, as there’s actually a collection of stories about Mary Poppins and her exploits. Wander down memory lane and embrace your inner child with a sweet cup of dark hot chocolate, as you meet chimney sweeps and dance on the ceiling. Extra points for adding whipped cream and marshmallows.
Mulled wine with Murder on the Orient Express
No cosy reading list would be complete without the queen of crime, Agatha Christie. This gem is set on the Orient Express train, as it tracks across snowbound Europe, so what better to curl up with on a cold winter’s night? While Poirot would probably prefer a creme de menthe, you can’t go wrong with a fragrant mulled wine as you immerse yourself in this enjoyable murder.
