A Big Bathroom Renovation Update

bathroom

We’re over halfway through the biggest project to date: the bathroom renovation. There have been some big changes over the last few weeks, so here’s your little sneak peek before we get to the final reveal!

The bathroom journey in pictures

Wow guys! Just look at that progress! Without the separate shower and bathtub, it’s looking so much bigger and more open. I am loving the floor tile so, so much. What a step up from that sad grey! I will admit, I was originally a little uncertain about this tile choice. I worried it might look too busy in our little space, but I think it looks amazing.

And how about all these wall tiles, folks:

Apologies for the slightly dark photography. There are no lights in the bathroom at the moment, and with the window boarded up there isn’t much to work with in there. These photos don’t show it grouted in yet, but that has been done now too, which is great.

The story of the sink

The next few days will see it all come together, with the shaving cabinets, vanity and other bits and bobs installed. They will also be putting in the toilet and the little sink for the powder room too.

Ah, that little sink. Let me tell you a tale.

When we were planning this, we were given a specific measurement for how wide the sink had to be, to fit into our little powder room. Only the width was given, and I was religiously careful in hunting down a sink that was that wide and no wider. We also couldn’t get a sink with a mixer, because of our water pressure. Accordingly, I sought high and low for a basin with three holes.

The first sink I ordered broke on its way to us. The company was super great and organised for a new one to be sent over. However, this delayed the start of works by a week. It was really frustrating.

The new sink arrived. It wasn’t broken. Beautiful and sleek. Exactly 550mm wide. There was a little shelf for my soap. Happy days! Excitement! Pride at getting it on a major sale!

Bathroom drama strikes

Day three of the renovation and my husband called me at work. The sink wasn’t going to fit. It was too deep! In my care to get something perfectly wide, I had forgotten to think about how far it was going to stick out from the wall. Self-recrimination! Mild swearing! Panicked Bunnings trip! Stress croissant eating!

We (AKA my husband) finally found a basin that was going to fit. After a bit of gymnastics we managed to get a single tap and faucet combo that just works. And by just I really mean we are millimetres off the tap just pouring water over the edge of the basin. But we got there. We will have a sink and further down the track we plan to sort out a more ergonomic tap set up.

Moral of the story, ask for every single measurement when you’re buying something. Please. Save yourself the stress and just ask the question. Just because they haven’t told you, doesn’t mean it isn’t important!

Almost there

bathroom

It’s much faster than I thought it would when we were waiting to get started. I can’t wait to show you the final bathroom, but what I’m really excited for is my first hot shower in my own home in seven months!

Stay tuned for the big reveal in the next few weeks.
