There is much poetry in a cup of tea

I’m a big tea fan. It’s not just the taste and caffeine, but the aesthetic of tea that appeals to me. Steam curls from pretty teapots as hot tea splashes into delicate cups and saucers. There are matching milk jugs and sugar pots! Tea is a slow and beautiful moment in the day, and I’m all about it.

Embracing the ritual

This sounds 100% bougie, but I love the little ritual that is making tea, especially loose leaf tea. It isn’t that complicated, but that extra time to measure, steep and pour is so relaxing. Even if it’s only five minutes, it gives me this tiny pause in the day. Coffee lovers out there might disagree, but I’ve never found that ritual, relaxing side to making coffee. I mean, just think how disappointing take-away tea is, while take-away coffee is as good as a sit down cup. The process is part of the enjoyment.

When things are hectic, those tiny breaks to make tea are great sanity savers. Drinking the tea is an added bonus.

Tea offers some small and beautiful to the day

A cup of tea has been a carrot to me getting up early. I’ve been amazed how that first cup of tea has motivated me to keep waking up. But it’s just such a mundanely beautiful moment. I turn on my lamp and watch the steam curl in that little beam of light. I see it brew and watch the milk clouds spread. The cup warms my cold hands and the first sip starts to wake me up.

Starting morning prayer with my cup of tea is just better. I’ve had a little moment that I’m grateful for, that I’ve enjoyed. That helps me want to pray, want to get moving. Of course, not every morning can start with a zen cup of tea. But I love when it does. It offers something small and beautiful for the day.

It’s the same through the work day. A pot of strong tea at 10am sets me up to power through. The post-lunch peppermint tea cuts my snacking and gives me a little break in the afternoon slump.

Simple.

Ordinary.

Lovely.
